{"id":84,"date":"2007-01-26T16:12:59","date_gmt":"2007-01-26T21:12:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/matthewchan.com\/2007\/01\/26\/learning-from-colin-powell-rudy-giuliani-and-larry-king-at-a-get-motivated-seminar-4\/"},"modified":"2007-01-26T16:16:50","modified_gmt":"2007-01-26T21:16:50","slug":"learning-from-colin-powell-rudy-giuliani-and-larry-king-at-a-get-motivated-seminar-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/matthewchan.com\/?p=84","title":{"rendered":"Learning from Colin Powell, Rudy Giuliani, and Larry King at a &#8220;Get Motivated&#8221; seminar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I write this post, I am staying a long weekend in the Atlanta area for 2 seminars.\u00a0 One of those seminars starred Rudy Giuliani, Larry King, and Colin Powell yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>It was one of Peter Lowe&#8217;s huge stadium-packed, traffic-clogging,\u00a0&#8220;Get Motivated&#8221; seminars where he brings in these huge star speakers\u00a0to speak and teach.\u00a0 I have to admit\u00a0I couldn&#8217;t resist.\u00a0 The thought of watching and learning from these heroes of mine was too irresistable to pass up.<\/p>\n<p>Rudy Giuliani&#8217;s presentation was a bit short at 35 minutes.\u00a0 However, he did make an impactful speech of how his leadership role model came from President Ronald Reagan.\u00a0 Rudy believed that Ronald was a fan of &#8220;big ideas&#8221; and holding true to them no matter what public opinion was.\u00a0 Being true to what you believe was a big theme in Rudy&#8217;s speech.<\/p>\n<p>Rudy Giuliani also believed that leaders must inherently be optimistic and decisive.\u00a0 He related his experiences of 9\/11 and what carried him through.\u00a0 It was very inspiring to hear his leadership style.<\/p>\n<p>Larry King was very entertaining.\u00a0 I was disappointed he was not on the Atlanta stage.\u00a0 However, he did appear through a satellite link talking to our audience.\u00a0 He was funny and told some great stories.\u00a0 However, the life lessons were less obvious.\u00a0 As I listened to him, I felt he was very modest but despite this, he subtly mentioned how willing he was when he was young to try all kinds of things such as broadcasting, newspapers, radio, etc. before he found his stride as an interviewer.<\/p>\n<p>Last but not least was Colin Powell.\u00a0 I can honestly say, Colin Powell was my favorite.\u00a0 He is a complex, multi-faceted man.\u00a0 He was a soldier, diplomat, author, and now a venture capitalist, speaker, innovator.\u00a0 So many sides came out as he spoke.\u00a0 I was busy scribbling down notes of many of the comments he made on leadership and management.\u00a0 I was inspired, humbled, and listening intently.\u00a0 I knew his time of teaching was extremely limited and my chances of meeting him in the future live would be very slim.\u00a0 Nevertheless, I felt I learned some life lessons from the wisdom he gleaned during his career.<\/p>\n<p>Colin Powell was impressive, thoughtful, and insightful.\u00a0 He made us think of the world as many of us never did before.\u00a0 And for me, he left some ideas that I hope will resonate for years to come.<\/p>\n<p>Because of backed up traffic, I never got to hear Michael Eisner.\u00a0 Zig Ziglar and Tom Hopkins were also in attendance to speak.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>All in all, it was a very heady day listening to some of my real-life heroes speak to us in the huge audience.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As I write this post, I am staying a long weekend in the Atlanta area for 2 seminars.\u00a0 One of those seminars starred Rudy Giuliani, Larry King, and Colin Powell yesterday.
